November 2015

Hello,

With the passing of Thanksgiving comes the end of fall and the beginning of my week long Christmas decorating project.    I can’t wait to get the lights up but, before I do that to keep in the spirit of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I am going to join in the madness.  No, I am not going to the mall.  I already did my shopping online.  I am going to give away $25 gift cards with every online order between now and Christmas.   Our
Schleese accessories, Thin Line pads and Christ pads and girths are all listed on the website ONLINE STORE so, if there is anything you want, order it now and take your $25 gift towards any purchase or service in 2016.  You can even give it away as a gift!

I have several quick thoughts I want to share this month.

SADDLE FIT CAN AFFECT OUR HORSES BEHAVIOR

Even some of the nicest horses cannot tolerate a saddle that is too long for his saddle support area, putting pressure on their lumbar or pressure on the spinal ligament.  Sometimes bucking is a reflex response, they simply cannot control their actions.  Sometimes bucking is caused by pain from a saddle pinching in the shoulder area or it could be pain in the pelvis.  How sad to think of all the horses that have been labeled cold backed, bad horses or have been "round penned" to the state of exhaustion for something that was not their fault.

$PONSORS OR TRAINER COMMISSIONS

There are none.   If someone has recommended Terry Peiper or Fit Right Saddle Solutions Saddles it is because they want to, not because they are getting anything more than the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping the horses.

When you go saddle shopping, get the facts so that you can decide what is best for you and your horse.    Just because all the riders in the barn or on Facebook are riding in a particular brand saddle doesn’t mean that a saddle like that will fit you and your horse. And if your trainer won’t even consider a different manufacturer, then you should  find out what her commission is for helping you buy that saddle.

NOT ALL SADDLES ARE CREATED EQUAL

There are a lot of english saddles that are advertised as adjustable but in reality they are only slightly adjustable with wool flocking or the angle can be changed with a key or different color plate.  Just flocking or just the gullet plate, will not necessarily get the saddle to fit your horse.   It may be less expensive at first to purchase a saddle with little or no adjustability, however just keep in mind that when the saddle no longer fits, you will be shopping again.

Most western saddles are not adjustable at all.  Sometimes, we can build a shimmed saddle pad if everything else fits except for the horizontal contact.  Approximately 8 out 10 western saddles bridge (hollow in the middle because the arc of the tree does not match the arc in the horse’s back) and about 2 of the 8 can be usable with a shimmed pad.

Saddle fit really does affect the horse’s behavior performance and ultimately the health of horse and rider.   If your horse is happy with his work, stands for saddling and mounting easily and doesn’t need medication, injections, massage, shock wave, chiropractic, special shoes or saddle pads you probably have a pretty good saddle fit.  But if the vet, chiropractic and massage are routine necessities, you have a problem.  It could be saddle or it could be the training, get the facts so that you can decide what is best for you and your horse.

 “I CAN’T AFFORD IT”

If the cost of an adjustable saddle is too much for your budget than I think you need it more than anyone.  Find a used one.  If money were no object, than it won’t matter if you have to spend tons of money on vet bills, medication, special shoes, pads, shaped girths, training and new horses.

SOME WORDS OF WISDOM

From George Morris in last month’s Practical Horseman  “While George’s temper is quick to flare when riders aren’t paying attention or a horse is disobedient, his short outbursts are followed by calm. This mirrors how he wants riders to react to their horses: If there’s a problem, deal with it, then calmly move on. He encourages riders to be aggressive if necessary but not to keep badgering the horse relentlessly. When things are going well, he frequently encourages, “That’s it. Thaaat’s it.”

Our new trailer is almost finished.    :)

I sincerely wish each and every one of you a wonderful holiday season and a very Merry Christmas.  Be safe and God Bless!

Terry Peiper has been "Helping Horses With Their People" in south central PA for over 35 years by training horses and riders.  In addition to being an accredited Richard Shrake Resistance Free ® Trainer/Instructor, she is certified by the American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA) and the International Society of Rider Biomechanics. She has more than 45 years horse showing experience in several different disciplines, as well as several years of fox hunting and open show judging experience. You could say she has been there and done that.

Studying saddle ergonomics started out as just another way for Terry to help her students however, it quickly took over her life when she discovered that her own horse, Easy had a condition called kissing spine which was likely caused by many years of riding in poor fitting saddles. “I can’t go back and undo what I have done but I can spread the word about proper saddle fit to prevent other horses from needless suffering” says Terry.

Recognizing the huge need for proper saddle fit, Terry joined the Saddlefit 4 Life professionals and started the FIT RIGHT SADDLE SOLUTIONS. She passionately pursues her mission to educate as many riders as possible of the importance of proper saddle fit, how it affects the horse’s performance, behavior and ultimately the health of horse and rider.

For riders searching for solutions, she proudly offers
Christ pads and girths, Thin Line shimmable saddle pads, Schleese dressage and hunt seat saddles, Specialized endurance and trail saddles and TW western saddles.   All the saddles can be adapted to fit the horse as it develops or fitted to another horse by changing the tree width, angle and horizontal panel contact.  Terry recommends saddle fit evaluations every 6 months.

Saddle fit evaluations/consultations, lectures, adjustable saddle sales/service and riding lessons are available at Buck N Horse Hollow in Carlisle PA or within a 120 mile radius (south central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland areas)
