January 2013

Happy Winter Everyone! The good news is, there is no mud. It's all frozen. Since it is too cold to ride or do saddle fit evaluations, I am enjoying some inside time and planning the 2013 calendar. I can’t wait! This is going to be the most exciting year yet. First we have the PA Horse World Expo coming up in just a few weeks. Come by and visit us at the same place, Booth #419.

In March, our clinics start and we have 2 lectures planned already. In April, I am going to Brenda Lantz’s Philippe Karl clinic in Shippensburg. In May, Fancy & I are riding with Lynn Palm and Cyril again. Also in May, Larry and I are attending a horse dissection clinic to enhance our understanding of how what we do with shoes and saddles effect the horse.

Here is our clinic and lecture schedule. Or if you lose this email a complete description of the clinics and the schedule can be found on the web site.

Kindergarten Clinic- “Getting Ready to Ride” Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 9am

Level 1 Clinic- Groundwork & Riding “How to speak horse” Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 9am

Level 2 Clinic- Groundwork & Riding “Quiet, supple & obedient” Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 9am

Level 3 Clinic-Resistance Free Riding “Responsiveness & fine tuning our aids” Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 9am.

Here is a brief summary of what we call groundwork. With a halter and a lead we walk, stop, turn and trot our horses. The important part of this equation is we (the handlers) are the leaders and the horses are the followers. After we set the pace and match our rhythm with the horse we show the horse how to turn so that it relaxes the horse and allows him to learn to trust us. Dr. Gerd Heuschman showed us how a properly executed disengagement actually releases endorphins (happy chemicals) to the brain with each step.

When you tell your horse with your body language that you are walking fast or slow, the horse is reacting. When you stop, back or turn, the horse is reacting. When you stand with your toes facing your horse it means to him no one is going anywhere. When you move your feet, it means move your feet. That is what they understand. We call this the horse rules or learning to speak horse; the language that horses understand.

All of our clinics are a combination of the First Phase of Classical Training as described by Alois Podhajsky, Former Director of the Spanish Riding School in his book The Complete Training of Horse and Rider in the Principles of Classical Horsemanship, and Richard Shrake's Resistance Free Training.

These methods are time tested, horse and rider user friendly for any discipline of riding. Our goal is to build a happy healthy athletic horse to improve performance and enhance relationships.
Rider pre-registration is required $125 (only 6 riders per clinic) Auditors $25

After riding, my favorite thing to do is teach. Here are the next couple of saddle fit lectures.

FEEDING MY 32 year old horse

FAST TRACK really significantly helped Stoney’s diarrhea problem, so I thought I would pass it on. My horse, Stoney is 32 years old. This time of the year when grass is scarce, he usually gets diarrhea. This year was worse then ever so we tried Fast Track. Within a couple of weeks of the recommended dosage Stoney is doing much better and he is picking up weight.

Stoney is also on a product called Amplify made by Purina. It is a fat supplement that really helps keep the weight on especially this time of the year. Lots of senior feed and all the 2nd cutting hay he can eat, which isn’t much. He is a happy boy just waiting for that grass to turn green.

Favorite link of the month: http://www.useventing.tv/#/video/56095260 especially the very end.

As always, thank you for reading our newsletter, forwarding it to your friends, joining us on facebook, keeping in touch and most of all for giving me the opportunity to help you with your riding goals and to pursue my goal "Helping Horses with Their People."

TTYS & God Bless
